Tarif 590 / ASCA Correspondence Table 2026: Which Code to Bill for Which Method?

By Anne T. T. · Published April 12, 2026 · 12 min read

Every ASCA therapist eventually faces the same question: which Tarif 590 code matches my method? The Tarif 590 / ASCA correspondence table is not intuitive — the same method can have multiple numbers depending on your recognition body, some methods share a code, and annual revisions create traps. In 2026, four codes were removed or merged. This article gives you a complete and up-to-date table, billing rules by therapeutic family, the 2026 changes, and the most common errors to avoid.

How the Tarif 590 structure works

Tarif 590 is the standardised billing system for outpatient complementary medicine services in Switzerland, managed by the complementary medicine insurers group (CONCORDIA, CSS, Groupe Mutuel, Helsana, Sanitas, SWICA, Visana) in collaboration with CAMsuisse. Since 1 January 2022, billing via PDF forms is no longer accepted: only approved software can transmit invoices.

The tariff is organised in five chapters:

ChapterContentUsers
Chapter 1General codes (anamnesis, reports, supplements, travel)All recognised therapists
Chapter 2Therapeutic methods, per 5 minutesOdA KT / ASCA therapists
Chapter 3Remedies, preparations, laboratoryBy accreditation
Chapter 4Physiotherapy / occupational therapy positionsPhysiotherapists, occupational therapists
Chapter 5NHP codes (federal naturopath diploma)Federal diploma holders only

Chapter 4 concerns physiotherapists and occupational therapists — it is not detailed here as it does not apply to ASCA therapists.

Universal unit: all treatment positions are counted per 5-minute period. For a one-hour consultation, you bill 12 units. If your hourly rate is CHF 120, the price per 5-minute unit is CHF 10 (i.e. CHF 120 ÷ 12).

Position 1200 — Anamnesis / Assessment / Diagnosis deserves special attention: it covers general assessments independent of the method. If your method already includes anamnesis in its description (e.g. osteopathy 1203), you are not obliged to bill it separately — but you can if the initial assessment exceeds the usual scope.

Each therapist may only use codes corresponding to the methods for which they are recognised by ASCA, RME, SPAK or APTN. Your RCC number (format Z123456.60 to Z123456.63 for complementary medicine) must appear on every invoice.

"Umbrella" methods (bill according to the recognised sub-method)

Some ASCA numbers are framework methods that group several sub-methods. In this case, you bill according to the sub-method actually practised:

  • ASCA 211 — Naturopathy WAMbill according to recognised sub-method
  • ASCA 231 — Naturopathy TCMbill according to recognised sub-method
  • ASCA 232 — Medical massagebill according to recognised sub-method
  • ASCA 234 — Medical massagebill according to recognised sub-method
  • ASCA 249 — Anthroposophic therapiesbill according to recognised sub-method

2026 changes: removed and merged positions

On 1 January 2026, the complementary medicine insurers group made the following changes to Tarif 590:

The changes below are based on the OdA KT and CAMsuisse circulars published in December 2025. Always check the current version at oda-kt.ch.

Positions permanently removed

CodeLabelReason for removal
1027Bioresonance (Bioresonanz-Therapie)Lack of scientific evidence, permanent removal
1141Dorn/Breuss TherapyMerged into other massage methods

Warning: if you still use these codes in your software, your invoices will be automatically rejected by the insurers in the group.

Positions merged into code 1004 (Acupuncture)

Since 1 January 2026, the following acupuncture variants are grouped under a single code:

Removed codeFormer labelNew code to use
1064Laser-Akupunktur1004 — Acupuncture
1071Moxibustion1004 — Acupuncture
1077Auriculotherapy (Ohrakupunktur)1004 — Acupuncture

Practical consequence: if you practise moxibustion or auricular acupuncture, now use only code 1004. Some outdated software may still display these old codes — check that your billing solution has integrated the 2026 version.

As a reminder, in 2024–2025 no new positions were added: recent revisions have been essentially consolidations.

Common correspondence errors and how to avoid them

Here are the six most common errors found in Tarif 590 invoices:

1. Using 1064, 1071 or 1077 after 1 January 2026 — These codes no longer exist. Any invoice mentioning them will be rejected. Use 1004 for all forms of acupuncture.

2. Billing 1200 (anamnesis) for every session — Position 1200 is for general assessments independent of the method. For a 15-minute introductory interview at the start of treatment, it is appropriate. Re-using it at every consultation as a “preamble” is an error — insurers challenge this billing pattern during audits.

3. Confusing 1052 (foot reflexology) and 1134 (general reflexology) — Position 1052 is specific to the reflex zone of the feet. If you work on other reflex zones (hands, ears, head), use 1134.

4. Using Chapter 5 codes without a federal diploma — Positions 1201 to 1223 are reserved for NHP (naturopaths with a federal diploma) and KT (KomplementärTherapeutIn with a federal diploma). An ASCA therapist without this qualification cannot bill them, even if they practise the method.

5. Omitting the RCC number on the invoice — The RCC number (format Z123456.60 to Z123456.63 for complementary medicine therapists) is mandatory. Without it, the invoice cannot be processed. If you don't know your number, contact SASIS SA (zsr@sasis.ch).

6. Mixing ASCA and RME methods without checking recognition — RME and ASCA do not recognise exactly the same methods. An RME recognition does not automatically give access to ASCA codes and vice versa. Check your annual recognition confirmation before billing.

How to verify your code with the supplementary insurer

Each supplementary insurer establishes its own list of reimbursed methods, independently of Tarif 590. The fact that a code exists in Tarif 590 does not guarantee reimbursement — you need:

  1. Your method is recognised by your insurer via ASCA, RME, SPAK or APTN
  2. The patient's supplementary insurance product specifically covers this method

Helsana, for example, published in January 2026 a list of methods for which it no longer recognises new therapists from 1 January 2026. Other insurers follow a similar policy of gradually closing certain less documented methods.

Recommended steps:

  • Log in to your professional space on asca.ch to check the status of your recognitions
  • Consult the annual ASCA/insurer recognition list published by OrTra TC
  • If in doubt about a specific method, contact the insurer directly before the first consultation

Frequently asked questions

My patient has CSS COMPLETE insurance. Which methods are covered?

CSS COMPLETE covers in principle ASCA/RME-recognised methods (subject to the applicable general conditions). The amounts and reimbursement percentages depend on the individual contract. Refer your patient to their contract or to CSS customer service to obtain confirmation before the first session.

Can I bill several different codes in the same session?

Yes, if you used distinct methods in the same consultation. For example, a session combining acupuncture (1004) and phytotherapy (1085) can be billed with both codes for the respective durations. Each invoice line corresponds to a 5-minute period.

Is position 1253 (formalised report) reimbursed by all insurers?

No. Position 1253 is provided for in Tarif 590 but some insurers do not reimburse it or consider it included in the treatment. Check each insurer's policy before billing it systematically.

Bioresonance (code 1027) was in my software. What do I do for my current patients?

Code 1027 has been invalid since 1 January 2026. Sessions performed before that date can still be billed with this code if they have not yet been invoiced. For 2026 sessions, there is no direct replacement code: bioresonance is no longer recognised as a distinct position in Tarif 590.

I have an ASCA 231 recognition (Naturopathy TCM). Which code should I use?

Method 231 is an umbrella method: you must bill according to the sub-method actually practised in each session (acupuncture → 1004, TCM phytotherapy → 1085, Qi Gong → 1092, etc.). If you practise a combination, detail each method and its duration.

Conclusion

The Tarif 590 / ASCA correspondence table is an essential tool that evolves every year. In 2026, the main change is the merger of all acupuncture variants under the single code 1004, and the removal of codes 1027 (bioresonance) and 1141 (Dorn/Breuss). To remain compliant, it is essential that your billing software integrates these updates automatically.
